Mixtape review: Deathtoricky “#ikfly”

Leo Tomkins Avatar

Debut full length project from Ireland’s most prosperous rapper.

Deathtoricky is still a very new name in underground rap scene with his earliest published work dating back to just over a year ago. Deathtoricky makes alternative and experimental trap which is very fun to listen to, as it’s clear he doesn’t take himself to seriously when making his songs and he just seems to do what he likes which, for the most part, works out.

With a track list of 12 songs, the project works out to be 21 minutes as each song is quite short. This can sometimes be annoying as your left wanting more, however Ricky seems to make each track feel like it perfectly stays its welcome. The only track I feel could be longer is “polo” which features an extremely hypnotic beat and flow from Ricky.

The cover for the tape features Ricky posing outside the sign for his town Celbridge, which gives a nice impression of home town pride. Ricky’s Irish accent is strong throughout the tape with references to Ireland and Irish things such as the songs “temple bar” and “ryanair”.

The project opens up with “tuesday” which instantly gives a comedic vibe to the tape. The beat starts off with a sample so heavenly it reminds me of Lil Bs “B.O.R” and Ricky comes in with the lyric “she wanna fuck on a tuesday” which goes back to me previously he really does not take himself seriously.

While snippets where previewed the only single to be released is “soul” which appears in the latter half of the tape. While not the best on the tape it is a nice addition with him living up to the name of the project in full “I kinda fucking love you”. However a lot of the songs are about his Love, not for girls, for rap. Songs like “so long” and “feel bout it” both show his appreciation and fear respectively of how he’s grown and what his fans have done for him.

The tape closes with “grateful” which starts with an interlude from his friend, reminiscent of one of his biggest songs “motives” which can be found on his previous 2025 released “relaxation zen room” EP. This is a nice touch as it acts as a full circle moment for this chapter in Deathtoricky’s career as this project has helped to launch him into a bigger public view and is the start of what I can only imagine will be a fulfilling career for him.
